# Swedish vs deep tissue massage: which one do you need?

The two most booked massages compared side by side: pressure, purpose, how you'll feel afterwards, and a quick way to choose.

Swedish and deep tissue are the two most popular massages we offer, and the question we hear most often is which one to choose. The short answer: **Swedish is for relaxation, deep tissue is for problem areas.** Here's the longer answer.

## The quick comparison

| | Swedish massage | Deep tissue massage |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Relaxation and stress relief | Releasing chronic tension and knots |
| Pressure | Light to medium-firm | Firm to strong |
| Pace | Flowing and rhythmic | Slow and focused |
| Areas | Even, full-body | Targets problem areas |
| Feeling afterwards | Relaxed, sleepy, light | Looser, possibly tender for 1–2 days |
| Best for | First-timers, stress, poor sleep | Back pain, stiff neck, desk workers |
| Price at our spa (60 min) | KSh 3,500 | KSh 4,500 |

## What Swedish massage does

Swedish massage uses long, gliding strokes, kneading and gentle rhythmic movements. It warms the muscles, encourages circulation and switches your body out of "busy" mode. Most people find their breathing slows within ten minutes.

**Choose Swedish if:**

- You feel stressed, wired or mentally tired
- You're sleeping badly
- It's your first professional massage
- You don't enjoy strong pressure

## What deep tissue massage does

Deep tissue massage works more slowly, with sustained pressure that reaches the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them. Therapists often use forearms and elbows as well as hands, and stay longer on specific spots.

**Choose deep tissue if:**

- You have knots that don't go away with stretching
- Your lower back, neck or shoulders ache most days
- You sit at a desk or drive for long hours
- Lighter massages feel nice but don't change anything

## Does deep tissue massage hurt?

It can feel intense, especially on very tight areas, but it shouldn't be sharp or make you hold your breath. A good therapist checks in and adjusts. The idea that it has to hurt to work is a myth. Tensing against pain actually makes it harder to release the muscle.

Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is common. Drink water, take a warm shower and move gently.

## Can you combine the two?

Yes, and many clients do. A session can be mostly Swedish with deeper work on the shoulders or lower back. Just tell your therapist at the start.

## A 30-second way to decide

Ask yourself: **"Do I want to feel better, or fix something?"**

- Feel better → [Swedish massage](/services/swedish-massage/)
- Fix something → [Deep tissue massage](/services/deep-tissue-massage/)
- Both → Deep tissue with a lighter full-body finish

## Other options worth knowing

- [Hot stone massage](/services/hot-stone-massage/) gives some of the depth of deep tissue with less pressure, thanks to the heat.
- [Sports massage](/services/sports-massage/) is deep tissue tailored to training and athletic recovery.
- [Aromatherapy massage](/services/aromatherapy-massage/) is a gentler Swedish-style massage with essential oils.
- [Full body massage](/services/full-body-massage/) covers you head to toe and lets you pick light, medium or firm pressure.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is deep tissue massage better than Swedish?

Neither is better. They do different jobs. Swedish is best for relaxation and stress, deep tissue for chronic tightness and knots.

### Should I get deep tissue massage for my first massage?

Only if you have a specific problem area. Otherwise, start with Swedish and move to deep tissue once you know how your body responds to pressure.
